Purchase, NY (Apr. 20, 2012) – Visiting NYU-POLY played spoiler Friday afternoon in Purchase's final home doubleheader, delivering a sweep of the twin bill. The first-place Fighting Blue Jays earned a 9-0 game-one win and capped the afternoon in a 14-3 victory.

After both teams traded zeroes in the first inning of game one, NYU-POLY struck first, scoring seven runs on six hits and three errors in the second inning. Panther starter Lindsay Froman (SR/Medina, NY) did her best to limit the damage, but the pesky bats of NYU-POLY kept the pressure on Purchase's defense.

Froman bounced back in the top half of the third, hurling her first one-two-three inning, while striking out the last two batters in the inning.

The Panthers still couldn't muster any hits or runs off NYU-POLY starter Miranda Merilli, who set down nine straight the first time through the order.

Purchase continued to hang tight in the top of the fourth. NYU-POLY put runners on the corners with one out, but Froman and the Panther defense kept the game within striking distance as the Purchase ace got catcher Megan Moran to fly out to center field. A nice running catch by Juliet-Rain Pagan (SO/Bronx, NY) turned into a nifty double play as she fired home, where catcher Alexis Vallario (JR/Yonkers, NY) applied the tag for the double play.

Fueled by the defensive gem, the Panther lineup went back to work in the bottom of the fourth. But Merilli was nearly untouchable. The strong-armed right-hander set down another three straight.

Pagan tried to energize the team once again in the fifth. A sprinting Pagan tracked down what would have been at least a double in the right field gap, coming from left center to make a sparkling grab in right center. Froman retired the next two batters for her second one-two-three inning of the game.

In the bottom of the fifth, Froman, playing in her final home games as a Panther, led off. Froman smashed a grounder to short for the first out as it appeared that Purchase might be inching closer to breaking through against Merilli. The NYU-POLY starter set down the next hitter, continuing her perfect game effort, but Mariel Perez (SR/Queens, NY) became Purchase's first base runner, drawing a two-out walk.

With two outs, Panther right fielder Cassandra Armstrong (SO/Schenectady, NY) lined another shot to shortstop, by Shelby Bruns made a nice play in the hole and fired across the diamond to keep the no-hitter intact.

A leadoff bunt single in the sixth keyed the eventual winning run as Bruns doubled Ryane Pappa to third. The next batter walked to load the bases bringing Corine Fitzgibbons to the plate. The first baseman smoked a line drive infield single off third baseman Alyse LaPadula (SR/New Rochelle, NY), plating the game's eighth run. A sacrifice fly pushed the lead to 9-0.

NYU-POLY picked up where it left off in game one with another strong start to game two. The visitors scored two in the first and two more in the second, adding a single run in the third before running away with the game in a six-run fourth. NYU-POLY then scored three more in the fifth before Purchase scored three in the bottom of the fifth showing some fight in the final inning.

Briana Feist picked up the win on the hill in game two. Bruns accounted for four of NYU-POLY's 19 hits in the second game of the doubleheader. Fitzgibbons scored three runs and drove home three to lead the way for the Fighting Blue Jays.
Leo, who started and took the loss for Purchase, collected two hits. Pagan added two hits of her own in a fine afternoon on the diamond. Vallario added an RBI. Abigail Katz (JR/Livingston, NJ) and Christina Sanderson (SO/Schaghticoke, NY) recorded the team's other RBIs.

Purchase will conclude its season tomorrow at the College of Mt. St. Vincent.
