Purchase, NY (Sept. 8, 2012) – Torrential runs and the threat of a tornado in the area nearly ruined Saturday's 5th Annual Purchase College Men's and Women's Cross Country Invitational, but organizers were able to stage the two races, navigating around the tortuous weather to crown a champion.

When the weather cleared a bit, the winner of the both the men's 8K and the women's 5K was the United States Merchant Marine Academy. USMMA captured the first 12 finishers on the men's side, with Andrew Walsh placing first. He finished the course in 28:44.4. He was followed by teammates David McGowan, John Weldon, Brendan Dooley and Daniel Baxter, respectively, as the Mariners ran away with the race. NYU-POLY's Eduardo Aponte broke the domination, finishing as one the top 10 runners – only seven place for USMMA – earning a medal.

The Culinary Institute of America and Farleigh Dickinson University at Florham finished second and third as a team. The Purchase men finished fourth overall and were paced by Corey Woodin (SO/Highland, NY) (34:24.1) and Carl Marsh (SO/hhampton, NY) (36:11.8). Newcomer Francis Jenks (SO/Queens, NY) finished right behind Marsh, contributing to a very solid team performance for Purchase.

The hometown story of the day had to be Purchase's Katherine Henri (FR/Staten Island, NY), who won the women's event, helping lift the Panthers to a third-place finish as a team. Henri championed the course in 21:17.3. Teammate Laurel Squadron (SO/Landenberg, PA) ran sixth, finishing in 23:20.8.

USMMA won the race behind fourth and fifth place finishers Gretchen Holoubek (22:26.0) and Amber Kinter (23:12.0), who paced the Mariners. CIA tied in points – 41 – but their sixth-place finishers determined the tiebreak, which handed USMMA a first-place trophy in the women's race – the first of the two meets on the afternoon at Purchase College. CIA grabbed second and the Panthers took third, with FDU and the College of New Rochelle rounding out the top five.

Purchase will look to build off the two strong finishes next weekend in the Manhattanville Invitational.
