Where Are They Now? Haughton Signs Pro Contract

Reigning Tournament MOP Realizes Dream

David Haughton (above in new uniform) inks pro contract overseas.
Periodically, Sports Information will report on a former Purchase College student-athlete or famous alum, and where the world has taken them these days. Today's "Where Are They Now?" – Men's basketball alum David Haughton.

Purchase, NY (Nov. 3, 2014) – Like many college basketball players around the country, David Haughton always talked about turning pro.

These days, it's not about talking the talk anymore for Haughton; it's about walking the walk.

The reigning Skyline Conference Men's Basketball Tournament Most Outstanding Player has signed his first professional contract. Haughton is the newest member of the Rakvere Tarvas squad in Estonia, where the team plays in the town of Rakvere.

Estonia is a country in the Baltic region of Northern Europe. It is bordered to the north by the Gulf of Finland, to the west by the Baltic Sea, to the south by Latvia and to the east by Lake Peipus and Russia.

And now, it's the new home of No. 14.

"It feels great," an elated Haughton said through email and text. "We just won two big games against a Russian team and against a number two team in our league. I got signed the day after the win against the Russian team and it's a dream come true."

Haughton's family shared his good news on facebook and through email, and the Purchase coaching staff all sent their congratulations to a recent star that is realizing his professional dreams not long after leading Purchase to another one of its own.

The former Panther forward helped Purchase won its fourth championship in five years last February, punching the program's return ticket to the NCAAs, where Haughton and company capped the college's most successful campaign with a win in the opening round and a narrow second-round defeat. In all, Purchase went 26-3 in 2013-14 thanks largely to the gritty, rebound machine.

The local product from nearby Greenburgh was tabbed MOP as he averaged 12.5 points and 17.0 rebounds in a pair of conference playoff victories. The senior captain scored 14 points and grabbed a program-record 26 rebounds on Feb. 27 in the Panthers' 88-73 semifinal win versus Old Westbury. He then scored 11 points on 5-of-6 shooting and added eight boards as Purchase earned a 100-82 victory over Mount Saint Mary on Mar. 1 in the finals.

Haughton committed just one turnover in 61 minutes of action.

"He's a hard worker," Purchase head coach Jeff Charney said. "He's fundamentally sound and is a very coachable ballplayer. We are excited for him and for our program. Congratulations David!"

Although known in Pantherville for No. 14, Haughton will wear No. 11 overseas. He is expected back in the states in December, where he will return to Purchase to receive his championship ring.

"It will be great to see him," Charney said. "We're all very proud of him."
