In his first season at the helm, Doty guided the Panthers to their first playoff berth since 2008. The club won 19 games in 2016, including seven in conference, securing the sixth seed in the tournament, where the team fell in the bottom of the seventh to the College of Mount Saint Vincent. Purchase, which won 10 games in 2015, started the season 14-4 and enjoyed some memorable wins, including a doubleheader sweep at the end of the season against St. Joseph's College-Brooklyn. Those two wins punched the team's ticket to the playoffs.
The new Panther head coach held the assistant position at Montclair State from 2008 through 2015. In addition, Doty's coaching resumes includes four coaching posts with Frozen Ropes, an 18U team, a position as a hitting and pitching instructor for Prodigy Training and some baseball coaching experience in New Jersey with the North Caldwell Nationals. Â
Doty received his MAT in physical education from Montclair State in 2013, as well as his undergraduate degree (BS) in physical education and health from the college in 2010.
Prior to coaching, Doty was an accomplished baseball player. In high school, he was a four-year varsity starter for St. John Vianney. While in high school, Doty, who played shortstop and pitched, played for the elite NJ Super 17 Baseball Program. He parlayed his high school baseball success to a college career at Montclair State, where he pitched for the program. Â
After finishing his playing career, he transitioned to the coaching ranks. Doty immediately took a position as an assistant coach for the softball program. Among his accomplishments, Doty says he is proud of assisting in hosting the Division III NCAA National Softball Tournament; winning NJAC championships (2008, 2013); being named part of the NCAA DIII NFCA Regional Coaching Staff of the Year (2008, 2012, 2013, 2014); and guiding Montclair to a regional and super regional in 2013 and 2014. Montclair finished in fifth and sixth place, respectively. In 2012, Doty was also part of a coaching staff that went on to be Union Regional Champions, posting a third place finish in the national tournament.
