Old Westbury, NY
(Oct. 27, 2010) – SUNY College at Old Westbury won the “Battle of the Panthers” Wednesday night, topping Purchase 3-1 at the Clark Athletic Center.
The Old Westbury Panthers won 25-21, 17-25, 25-15 and 25-13, falling in the second set in what was a much more entertaining matchup than the final scores might reflect.
OW improved to 21-8 overall on the season and 8-2 in conference. Purchase falls to 7-12 and 3-7, respectively.
Senior Tanya Vinson was recognized prior to the match on Senior Night as Old Westbury showed appreciation for her two years of dedication to the program. OW head coach Marjahna Segers was also honored for her 100th career victory.
Kristina Giordano led Old Westbury with her 12th double-double of the season. Tynisha George paced OW with 10 kills followed by Vinson, who added eight and hit .533 for the match.
Purchase was paced by
Rebecca Dittler (JR/Elmira Heights, NY) and
Lindsay Navagh (FR/Fulton, NY). Dittler totaled 13 kills. Navagh added six kills and a team-leading 22 assists.
The Panthers played their best sets early, netting 14 and 10 team kills, respectively, in the first two games before tapering off in the final two sets. Their poor play down the stretch gave OW the opening it needed to pull away late.
Purchase, which has been eliminated from postseason contention, will look to close the season on a high note Friday at York.
