Panepinto Delivers Double OT Knock Out at Maritime

Senio co-captain Ashley Panepinto (No. 13) guided the Panthers to a thrilling victory Friday night at Maritime.
Box Score

Bronx, NY (Oct. 14, 2011) Ashley Panepinto wasn't going to let her team come away with a tie Friday night at SUNY Maritime.

Instead, she powered an unassisted goal in double OT that handed the pesky Panthers a 3-2 victory. Purchase staged an improbable comeback in the rain, tallying a late tying score near the end of regulation before trudging through nearly two OT periods in search of Panepinto's game-winning score. The goal set off a huge celebration for Purchase at Reinhart Field.

The heartbreaking loss drops the Privateers to 2-12-11 (0-6 Skyline), while the Panthers improve to 6-5 (3-3 Skyline).

Maritime held the lead twice in the game, as junior Jorrie Trenkamp opened the scoring in the 26th minute when she received a pass from freshman Gabrielle Fox for a breakaway down low and buried a shot to give the Privateers a 1-0 lead. Purchase answered quickly in the 30th minute when Abigail Katz (JR/Livingston, NJ) got her own rebound and stuffed it home to tie the game.

Maritime's Samantha Easterman then scored a go-ahead goal for Maritime just five minutes later, grabbing the rebound of Trenkamp's shot and firing it into the net. The score stayed the same into halftime, despite a close opportunity by the Panthers when a shot got past the Privateers keeper.

In the second half, Maritime was primarily on the defensive side and did a good job keeping Purchase from scoring until the Panthers finally broke through in the 76th minute on a goal by Cat Viscardi (FR/Lake Ronkonkoma, NY) assisted by Panepinto (SR/North Rockland, NY).

Just a minute later, Purchase almost had a potential game-winner, but the shot that got past Marietta was cleared before it trickled into the net.

The first overtime saw the Panthers get two more shots, but neither was on goal. In the second overtime, Purchase turned up the heat and let off two consecutive shots that rang off the crossbar. Over a minute later, Panepinto got the ball at the top of the 18-yard box, made a move around the Maritime defender and let the ball fly from the top of the box that sailed out of the reach and over the head of Courtney Marietta for the game-winner.

Overall, the Panthers outshot the Privateers, 38-7.
