Box Score

Purchase, NY (Sept. 14, 2011) – Purchase jumped back into the win column Wednesday night, coasting past Yeshiva University in its Skyline Conference opener at home.

The Panthers (2-1), who bounced back from a tough defeat Saturday at NJCU, defeated visiting Yeshiva, 7-0. The victory also marked the first for rookie head coach Devon Whalen, who replaced Michael Butler earlier in the week.

Purchase overwhelmed the Macs in the first half, scoring five times in the opening period. Rookie Nathalie Lavelanet (FR/South Salem, NY) got the ball rolling with her third goal of the season 1:52 in.

Shortly later, co-captain Abigail Katz (JR/Livingston, NJ) struck off an assist from Cat Viscardi (FR/Lake Ronkonkoma, NY). Less than three minutes later, Katz added her second goal of the game – and third of the season – off an assist from Lavelanet. The score opened the flood gates.

With the Panthers leading 3-0, Lavelanet buried her team-leading fourth goal of the season (11:14) on an unassisted finish. A shot rebounded off the cross bar and the rookie sensation blasted one past Yeshiva keeper Eli Goldenberg. Fellow newcomer Melissa Valencia (FR/New York, NY) capped the scoring in the first half with her first goal of the season.

Purchase dominated, playing keep away for much of the final 20 minutes of the first half and then continued the trend in the second period. The Panthers added a pair of late scores, one off a penalty kick and the other inside the final five minutes of action. Alyssa Rosado (JR/Brooklyn, NY) netted her first goal of the season off the PK, while newcomer Cat Viscardi (FR/Lake Ronkonkoma, NY) added her first goal of the season to cap the scoring at 7-0.

In defeat, Yeshiva dropped to 0-4-1 overall.

The Panthers, who have won two of three to open the fall schedule, return to action next Tuesday at Bard College. The matchup is the first of four road contests over their next five games.
