Purchase, NY
(Sept. 24, 2011) – The ever-improving Purchase College women's volleyball team suffered a minor setback Saturday, dropping both ends of their conference double-dual match with Farmingdale State and SUNY College at Old Westbury.
The afternoon of volleyball at Purchase also featured two other matches as SUNY Maritime and Old Westbury squared off and FSC and Maritime met, with the Privateers falling short in both of those contests.
As for the Panthers, Purchase fell in four sets to the Rams – 25-19, 25-19, 23-25, 25-9 – and three to OW – 25-12, 25-20, 25-19 – in another pair of close finals.
“We're getting there,” said Purchase
head coach Bill Kutner afterward. “We played some close matches, but just came up a little short at the end against two very good teams. We're rebuilding day-by-day and need some of our younger players to take that next step. We feel that they will this season, and we're extremely excited about the future.”
Olivia Hintz (SR/East Aurora, NY) led Purchase against Old Westbury. She totaled seven kills and six digs. Setter
Lindsay Navagh (SO/Fulton, NY) finished with 14 assists in the late match.
Earlier in the day, Hintz led the way with eight kills against FSC. Navagh added 12 assists in the opening match, while fellow newcomer
Katie Westervelt (FR/Congers, NY) contributed 10 assists in defeat.
Purchase had 38 defensive digs against the Rams. FSC was spurred on by Dominique Cunningham and her 15 kills.
OW's Ashley Greene paced the field for the Panthers against Purchase, totaling 13 kills.
Purchase (3-6, 1-3 Skyline Conference) returns to action Tuesday at CNR.
