Defensive Rams Upend Purchase

Box Score

Purchase, NY (Oct. 9, 2012) – Farmingdale State topped the Panthers 3-0 at Purchase Tuesday night.

Farmingdale took an early 1-0 lead, breaking the scoreless tie late in the opening period – and then held on for the remainder of the half and the rest of the second for the shutout victory.

In one of the few offensive highlights of the night, the Rams (8-6, 3-2 Skyline Conference) featured a nice pass inside the box, crossing one from eight yards, as Ashlee Thompson assisted Christina Merrill to put FSC on the scoreboard. The goal came in the 40th minute of the first half.

In the second half, Thompson then buried an unassisted rebound into the back of the net in the 76th minute. FSC capped the scoring shortly later on a header by Sara Rivadeneyra.

Although the Rams broke through late, it was Farmingdale's defensive effort that was the story. Backed by a sterling performance from her defense, Brenna Blair was also sharp in goal for the Rams, sealing the shutout. Blair and the FSC defense limited the Panthers in their opportunities around the net.

In the other goal, rookie netminder Kristy Colangelo (FR/Staten Island, NY), fresh off her Skyline honor roll selection Monday, was impressive for Purchase. She turned away eight shots on goal, making a handful of incredible saves, despite the final score.

FSC outshot Purchase, 25-3.

The Panthers (6-6, 4-2 Skyline) will look to bounce back Thursday night at home in the second game of two straight at Purchase this week.
