Early Goals Lead Purchase Past Beavers

Panthers Hold Off Late Push from CCNY, Win 2-1

Box Score

New York, NY (Sept. 30, 2012) – A rare Sunday matchup, the only one of its kind on this year's fall schedule for the 2012 Purchase College women's soccer team, was a nail-bitter in the final 10 minutes, but in the end, the visiting Panthers held on for a dramatic 2-1 non-conference win against the City College of New York.

Two early scores proved to be enough for Purchase, who toppled CCNY this afternoon at Randall's Island Field 44 after the host Beavers cut the score to 2-1 with 10 minutes remaining. Tabathia Azor scored her second goal of the season on a cross by Taylor Jo Gillen to get back in the game for CCNY.

However, rookie sensation Marykate McGee (FR/ East Rockaway, NY) handed Purchase a 1-0 advantage and Abigail Katz (SR/Livingston, NJ) provided the eventual game-winning goal as the Panthers knocked off a very good 7-2 CCNY squad. In the process, the Panthers improved to 5-4 on the season, reeling off their second win in three days. McGee headed her score in an empty net and Katz, the team's scoring leader, netted hers on a touch pass from Samantha Secord (FR/Hopewell Junction, NY), who has also been hot of late offensively. For Katz, the score marked her 10th goal of the season.

CCNY goalkeeper Nicole Carroll saw plenty of action and recorded 12 saves in the game as the Panthers fired 27 shots in the physical contest. Purchase goalkeeper Imani Humphries (FR/Washington, D.C.) recorded five saves in her first game at goalie this season.

Purchase returns to action at Sage on Oct. 3, as the first-place Panthers resume their conference schedule. Purchase is currently 3-0 in league play.
