South Yarmouth, Mass. (Sept. 1-2, 2012) – Women's soccer faced fierce competition to kick start the fall campaign over the holiday weekend, taking part in the first-ever 2012 ECAC Division III Soccer Classic on Cape Cod.

Although the Panthers would drop both games, the weekend was highlighted by a series of events and ultimately was more about the experience than the final scores, many said afterward. The team opened the tournament Saturday morning, Sept. 1, following an opening banquet on Friday night as the Classic debuted on the cape.

“Great start to our season,” exclaimed Amanda Maertz (SO/Holbrook, NY).

“The score may not reflect the hard work we put in to prepare for our first game but I am excited for what the future will bring,” noted rookie Agustina Miguel (FR/Merrick, NY).

The Classic was hosted at Peter Homer Memorial Park in South Yarmouth and the inaugural tournament included men's teams from Colby-Sawyer College, John Jay College and Plymouth State University, and on the women's side; Bridgewater State University, Norwich University and Purchase. Both the men and the women played a round-robin format over the course of the three day tournament. In addition, Saturday's festivities also debuted a clinic for local youth in which members of the women's soccer team at Purchase, including the coaching staff, instructed on the fundamentals of the game and worked closely with children on skills and techniques.

"In coming to the Cape, we gained an unforgettable experience that will help us continue to succeed throughout our season,” added veteran Alyssa Rosado (SR/Brooklyn, NY).

In Saturday's opener, Norwich University's Alex Frank tallied less than eight minutes into the contest and Sara Goes scored two second half goals to lead the Cadets to a 3-0 win over Purchase in the second game of the tournament. Frank's goal was the first of the season for Norwich, which had lost to Bridgewater State University on Friday by a 2-0 count.

Neither team had a true scoring opportunity the remainder of the half as much of the game was played in the middle third of the field.

Norwich out shot Purchase, 16-9, in the game, and had a 4-1 lead in corner kicks. Kristy Colangelo (FR/Staten Island, NY) and Kristen Rancaniello (JR/Riverhead, NY) combined for seven saves for the Panthers.

Sunday, Bridgewater State University's women's team became the only team of the six that competed in the 2012 ECAC Division III Soccer Classic on the Cape to finish with a 2-0 record as the Bears defeated Purchase, 5-0.

The Bears opened the scoring in the seventh minute as Katie Nasuti took a centering pass from Emily Lane and shot from the right side of the box to the lower left corner. The Bears scored three more times prior to the end of the stanza. Kerin Gaydo scored the only goal of the second half on an assist from Megan O'Leary in the 60th minute.

Bridgewater dominated the contest both offensively and defensively, outshooting the Panthers 22-0. Purchase goal keepers Jess Lindsay (JR/Rochester, NY) and Rancaniello combined for five saves.

“From different situations on the field, we learned how to work together as a team,” explained rookie Marykate McGee of the tough non-conference competition to open the season.

"With all the different situations we faced on the Cape, it turned out to be an eventful and fun experience,” added Rosado.
