Brooklyn, NY (Oct. 12, 2013) – Head coach Marc Solondz knows a thing or two about winning matches at NYU-POLY.
And although it's his former stomping grounds, Solondz, now the head coach at Purchase, guided the Panthers to two victories Saturday, including one against his former team.
Purchase topped NYU-POLY, 3-2, in five sets and also bested Old Westbury, finishing the afternoon in a sweep of the rival conference Panthers.
The tri-match featured Purchase, Old Westbury and NYU-POLY, with the hosts splitting its two matches, Purchase winning both and Old Westbury losing both at the Jacobs Gymnasium in Brooklyn.
The hosts took the first set 25-15 and dropped the second 25-20. In the third game, the Jays struggled out of the gate, allowing Purchase to get off to an 8-1 start behind three kills by Cathryn Mulvey (SR/Scarsdale, NY).
Poly got back in it with a 6-0 stretch. With the game deadlocked at 17, a couple of attack errors by the Panthers helped give the hosts a 21-17 advantage.
However, the visitors stormed back on a 7-1 run to make it 24-22, only allowing the lone point off a service error. Purchase held on from there to take the set, 25-23.
In the fourth set, six unanswered points spurred a 25-15 final for NYU-POLY, setting the stage for the fifth set.
The final game of the match was very tight as well, and was tied at the third, fourth, sixth, eighth and thirteenth points. Ultimately, it was Purchase coming up with the crucial two scores to win the set, 15-13 and the match, 3-2.
Alyssa Niquette and Stephanie Serrano led the Jays with eight kills apiece.
Purchase was paced by the trio of Mulvey, Alicia McCarthy (FR/Plano, TX) and Alex Lally (FR/Sunnyvale, TX). Mulvey contributed 12 kills. McCarthy led the way with 14 and Lally added 13 of her own.
Against OW, Purchase took the matchup despite hitting .151. Old Westbury combined to hit at a season-best rate .333, but Purchase played well in the clutch and strung together some key series en route to its second conference win of the season.
In the loss, Jocelyn Small used 12 kills on 22 swings to hit .500 in addition to scooping up 13 digs to lead Old Westbury with her third straight double-double.
Panther setter Olivia Schoeller (FR/Ronkonkoma, NY) and her 25 assists teamed up with 14 kills by McCarthy to pace the Purchase offense.
