Old Westbury, NY (Oct. 28, 2013) – Purchase led by two goals Monday at Old Westbury, but the rival Panthers staged a comeback and prevailed 3-2.
Despite the defeat, Purchase clinched a postseason berth, something that softened the loss for the visiting Panthers.
In the win, Old Westbury improved 10-7 overall and 4-3 in the Skyline Conference. Purchase finishes the season at 5-12 overall and 3-6 in the Skyline.
With the win, Old Westbury earned a trip to the Skyline Conference Championship Tournament as the No. 4 seed and will host No. 5 Mount Saint Vincent on November 2 at 12 p.m. No. 6 Purchase also clinches a postseason berth and will travel to No. 3 St. Joseph's College-LI Saturday at 1 p.m.
For the women's soccer program at Purchase, this is its fifth time in seven years advancing to the postseason. It also marks the first playoff berth for Stephanie Janasiewicz as a head coach. Janasiewicz, a former Panther player herself, was an assistant coach on two previous teams before making the transition to head coach this fall. This season's tilt also matches them against the same team they faced last fall in the playoffs.
As for Monday night's game, Purchase took an early 2-0 lead, holding the host Panthers scoreless in the first half. First-year ace Annette Elson (SO/Las Vegas, NV) scored her third season goal and first for the visiting Panthers in the conference matchup. Christina de Jesus (JR/Purchase, NY) added a second off a rebounded shot from Melissa Valencia (JR/Medellin, Columbia).
Old Westbury knotted the score at 2-2 off goals by JoAnna Kettel at the 42nd and 78th minute. A late third goal by Stephanie Maybie concluded the scoring in the Old Westbury rally.
