Bronx, NY (Oct. 2, 2013) – A big second half by SUNY Maritime was the difference.
With three goals in the second, the Maritime women's soccer team came back from a halftime deficit to upend Purchase 3-1 on Reinhart Field Wednesday evening.
The victory was the team's eighth of the season, tying a program record. The win was also Maritime's first-ever over Purchase, as the Panthers have handled the all-time series against Maritime in the past six head-to-head contests.
In the second half, Jorrie Trenkamp netted the first two goals of the game for Maritime, while Marisa Athan picked up the final goal.
Purchase broke through first, when Amanda Green (FR/Roslyn Heights, NY) used her quickness to sprint down the right wing and push a sharp-angle shot into the goal for the 1-0 Panther lead.
The lead held until halftime with Purchase having a 10-5 lead in terms of shots at the break.
Just under nine minutes into the second period, after Maritime had already taken three shots in the half, it was Trenkamp to net the game-tying goal.
Purchase came close to pulling back within a goal with just over two minutes left in regulation as Cristina de Jesus (JR/Purchase, NY) sent a screaming shot from about 40-yards away just off the very top of the crossbar.
But that was as close as the Panthers would get.
In the win, Maritime improved to 8-4 overall and 2-1 in the Skyline. Purchase is now 3-7 on the season and 1-2 in the league.
