Bronx, NY (Sept. 16, 2013) – The women's soccer team earned a 4-0 victory at Lehman College Monday afternoon.
The victory is the first of the season for the Panthers and it marks a career highlight for head coach Stephanie Janasiewicz, who earns her first win as a head coach following a two-year stint as a collegiate assistant for the program. Purchase is now 1-5. The loss dropped Lehman to 4-3 in the non-conference matchup.
"It's exciting to see all the hard work that the team is putting in finally being reflective in the outcome," Janasiewicz said. "We have played better than our record and I believe things are starting to come together. It's always nice to get the first one out of the way."
The Panthers opened with two goals in the first and added two insurance goals in the second. Amanda Maertz (JR/Holbrook, NY) scored the game's first goal off a turnover that was dribbled across the field and in for a quick 1-0 strike (23:04). Shortly later, Gia Sergovich (JR/Waterviet, NY), like Maertz, scored her first goal of the season. This goal came off a direct kick from outside the box.
In the second half, Cristina de Jesus (JR/Purchase, NY) scored a goal in her second consecutive game. Marykate McGee (SO/East Rockaway, NY) put the icing on the cake with a scramble in front of the net and score (62:45) for the 4-0 final.
Jess Lindsay (SR/Rochester, NY) started in goal and earned the victory for Purchase. Imani Humphries (SO/Washington, D.C.) played the second half and contributed to the shutout, posting another 45 minutes of scoreless soccer for the visitors.
For Lehman, the Lightning was paced by goalkeeper Melanie Varillas, who despite the loss, made 11 saves.
