Bronx, NY (Sept. 21, 2013) – Red-hot Lehman College ran its streak to nine straight Saturday, defeating Purchase and Cooper Union.
The Panthers suffered a minor setback in a 3-0 loss. The Lightning are now 9-2 on the season, and remain 3-0 inside the CUNY Athletic Conference. The current seven match win streak is the longest run since 2011.
In the first match, the Lightning beat Purchase with set scores of 25-21, 25-17, and 25-11.
Jo-Marie Aquino led the hosts with 14 kills. She also compiled four solo blocks, eight digs, and two service aces. Setter Jessica Gonzalez had 22 assists with four service aces. Cari English registered seven kills, four blocks, and three service aces.
"We led early in the first game until tied 12-12 when Lehman tied and then went on to take the lead and win the game," Purchase head coach Marc Solondz explained of the loss. "From there Lehman would control the rest of the match, leading from the start to finish in both the second and third sets.
"It was a tough day for us," he added. "But Lehman is a very strong team, and It's a match our team can learn from moving forward."
Alicia McCarthy (FR/Plano, TX) led the way for Purchase with seven kills. Moneace Smith (JR/San Francisco, CA) also played well in defeat, registering two blocks in the loss.
Purchase is now 3-3 on the season and will return to action Thursday at home, when the Panthers welcome rival Farmingdale State for their league opener.
