Box Score Purchase, NY
(Sept. 12, 2014) – The Purchase College women's soccer team bested Yeshiva University Friday afternoon in the Panthers' home opener.
Purchase topped YU 6-0 in the matinee. The early noon start didn't seem to slow the Panthers, who recovered nicely from an 0-2 record, to jump into the win column.
"The team looked good today and it's something we can build off of," said Purchase first-year
head coach Joe Ruesgen, who collected his first victory on the sidelines as a Panther skipper. "We have a young squad, but we are making strides and today is a step forward."
Yeshiva, which also has a young and developing program, fell to 0-6 to start the fall schedule.
Purchase (1-2) broke the scoreless tie on its first goal of the season. Forward
Amanda Green (SO/Roslyn Heights, NY) picked up where she left off last fall in a strong rookie campaign, netting the game's first goal.
With her parents in the stands watching, midfielder
Gia Sergovich (SR/Watervliet, NY) assisted on the 1-0 strike. The opening goal, a chip shot from inside the 18, came almost seven minutes into the game.
With 27:04 on the scoreboard, the Panthers increased their lead to 2-0.
Nathalie Lavelanet (SR/South Salem, NY) scored her first of the season on a cross. The goal was assisted by Panther newcomer
Emily Saltman (FR/Huntington, NY), who played well on both ends of the field in her home debut.
Lavelanet would return the favor on Purchase's third goal – the second of the game for Green, another cross that pushed the lead to 3-0.
That combination of Lavelanet and Green would connect for the sophomore's third goal of the game. The hat trick came at 32:53 into the contest and handed the Panthers a swift 4-0 advantage.
Purchase added two second-half goals to cap the scoring.
Kristen Kohn (JR/Morristown, NJ) scored her first goal of the season and was followed by Saltman, who scored the sixth goal off of the game and her first of the season on an assist from fellow rookie
Leah Reinke (JR/Northville, NY).
Panther goalie
Imani Humphries (JR/Washington, DC) recorded her first win of the season in net.
In the loss, YU was led by keeper Elana Kook, who turned away 26 shots.
Up next, Purchase travels to WestConn on Sept. 15.
