Purchase, NY (Sept. 13, 2014) – The first day of the 2014 Purchase College Panther Invitational unfolded Saturday, with Montclair State sweeping its first two matches in the two-day event.

The Panther invite featured six teams, including the hosts Panthers. Purchase opened in a 3-0 loss to Rutgers-Newark (25-12, 25-14, 25-16). Rutgers-Newark would later fall to SUNYIT in a five-set thriller.

Meanwhile, Purchase capped the long afternoon in a 3-0 (25-16, 25-17, 25-17) defeat to SUNYIT, which joined Montclair State in going 2-0 on the afternoon.

Farmingdale State, which lost to Montclair 3-0, defeated Albertus Magnus, 3-1. Montclair also defeated Albertus 3-0.

As for the Panthers, the hosts dropped to 1-10 despite some strong play against some very strong out-of-conference competition. Alex Lally recored (SO/Sunnyvale, TX) recorded 15 assists in the loss to Rutgers-Newark, while teammates Sarah Gabler (SO/East Concord, NY) and Jenna Nardi (SR/Yorktown Heights, NY) shared the team lead with seven kills.

In the late match, the Panthers were paced by Nardi again (seven kills, 10 digs) and Gabler and Julia Chirlin (FR/Albany, NY), who each recorded 16 digs apiece. Lally added 14 assists.

The day two schedule will open with Purchase vs. Albertus Magnus at 11 a.m. on center court. Farmingdale and SUNYIT are the other early matches, while Montclair State/SUNYIT and Rutgers-Newark/Albertus Magnus will follow at 1 p.m. The final matches Sunday feature Purchase taking on Montclair State and Farmingdale vs. Rutgers-Newark at 3 p.m.
