(Sept. 19, 2014) – The Purchase College women's volleyball team split the opening action Friday at Keystone College, defeating Medgar Evers, 3-0, and falling to host Keystone, 3-0.
The Giants, which swept two matches Friday, defeated Purchase and Wilkes University, to level their record at 5-5.
Keystone's win of the Wilkes marked the first time ever that the Giants have defeated the Colonels in the eighth meeting all-time between the local opponents.
Against the Panthers, Keystone jumped out to a 1-0 lead with a big, 25-8 win in the opening set before claiming the second frame 25-14. The Giants then closed out the match with a 25-12 decision in the third set.
Keystone's Hannah Zuchowski led all players with 14 digs, while Shatia Silas put down nine kills in the victory. .
Purchase was paced by three kills from
Moneace Smith (SR/San Francisco, CA) while
Victoria Blum (SO/Bronx, NY) dished out two assists. Smith and
Sarah Gabler (SO/East Concord, NY) added two service aces apiece, with Gabler picking up a team-high five digs in the loss.
The Panthers rebounded nicely in the second match, topping Medgar 25-14, 25-22, 25-15 for their second win of the fall.
In that contest, Gabler paced all Panthers with eight kills.
Jenna Nardi (SO/Yorktown Heights, NY) and Smith added four each in the win.
Emily Seto (SO/North Brunswick, NJ) handed out nine assists in the victory. Smith led Purchase defensively with six digs.
Purchase (2-14) yielded a .643 attacking percentage as a team in the third set to close out the win.
Medgar, which drops to 2-9, was led by Kalifa Roberts and Kiwelew Mlimwengu, who finished with 11 and 10 kills, respectively.
