(Sept. 27, 2014) – It was the dual of the Panthers Saturday afternoon as host Purchase College took on rival SUNY Old Westbury in a Skyline Conference women's soccer game. Led by offensive ace
Amanda Green, the Purchase Panthers defeated Old West, 3-1, for the first time in program history.
Green (SO/Roslyn Heights, NY) leveled the match at 1-1 in the 6th minute off a through pass from first-year standout
Emily Saltman (FR/Huntington, NY). Then, at 13:59, Saltman buried the game-winning goal in the upper left corner of the net. Green collected the ball in transition near midfield, dribbled past a defender to the top of the 18-yard box and sent it ahead to Saltman.
Purchase had a 2-1 advantage over the visiting Panthers heading into the second half.
Assisted by defender
Samantha Rich (JR/Providence, RI), Green secured the win for Purchase in the 79th minute. The sophomore beat Old Westbury goalkeeper Caitlin Thomas one-on-one for the marker.
Junior goalkeeper,
Imani Humphries (JR/Washington, D.C.) totaled an impressive 10 saves for Purchase to offset a 21-10 advantage in shots by Old Westbury.
Old Westbury went up early when Skyline Conference Women's Soccer Player of the Week, Stephanie Maybie, scored the opening goal less than a minute into the game. The goal marked Maybie's 15th of the season as she continues to lead the Skyline boards with 29 total points.
With the win, Purchase advances to 4-4 overall and remains undefeated, 2-0, in the Skyline. Old Westbury drops to 4-4-1 overall and 0-2 in league action with the loss.
The Panthers return to their home field this Tuesday as they get set to host Lehman College in a non-conference game under the lights at 7 p.m.
