Purchase, NY
(Oct. 27, 2015) – The College of Mount Saint Vincent, a playoff-bound Skyline Conference team, utilized a strong second half to walk away with a 4-1 win Tuesday night at Purchase.
The Dolphins (11-6-2, 5-3-2 Skyline) led 2-1 at the break, but padded their slim lead to seal the win. Purchase (4-14, 3-7 Skyline), the defending league champs, finish the season outside of the six-team playoff after battling injuries and some tough single-goal losses, including Saturday's 1-0 overtime final to Maritime.
Saturday's defeat eliminated the Panthers from postseason contention, but Purchase came to play tonight, keeping pace with the Dolphins throughout the first 45 minutes and for a good portion of the second half.
The Dolphins struck first on a goal from Andrew Gomez, but Purchase tied it at one-all on penalty kick from
Myles Clohessy (SR/Cornwall, CT). For Clohessy, it was his third goal of the season.
Offensively, CMSV capped the competitive first period on a PK of its own, scored by Tim Guido in the 33rd minute.
It remained a one-goal game over the final 12 minutes of the first. The visitors held a slim 14-9 margin in shots in the opening stanza.
But the second half is where the Dolphins broke through. CMSV got on a roll and added a pair of scores from Jair Magallan, his eighth and ninth of the season, respectively to push the lead to 4-1.
The Panthers held their own in the second, holding an advantage in corners, but the Dolphin defense managed to hold off Purchase's comeback efforts. The Panthers had some nice shot opportunities from newcomers
Yianni Amvrosiatos (FR/Warwick, NY) and
Aidan Leavens (FR/Whitestone, NY). Star defender
Anthony Iurillo (SO/Flushing, NY) led the team in shots, registering five on the night.
Despite the loss, the evening was highlighted by the Purchase coaching staff playing all of the seniors in their final game, including a touching keeper switch between
Esteban Aguilar (SR/East Hampton, NY) and
Uriel Milechberg-Chirom (SR/Buenos Aires, Argentina) in the second half.
