Panthers Play Three on the Weekend

Bronxville, NY (Oct. 4, 2015) – The Purchase College women's volleyball played three matches on the weekend, including two at New Jersey City University Saturday and one on Sunday at Sarah Lawrence.

On Sunday, the hosts won 3-1. Sarah Lawrence gave up a 6-0 Purchase run early in the second set but responded with a 7-0 rally. The Gryphons led 21-16 before the Panthers struck back, but SLC held on for the 25-23 set.

Rookie CJ Kelly netted four aces and a kill in the frame.

A 7-0 Purchase run provided an ominous start to the third set. SLC kept fighting and tied the score at 16-16, but the Panthers ran away with nine of the final 10 points in a 25-17 set. The Gryphon offense was muted in the set, totaling eight offensive points.

Purchase led the match at 13-10, but Sarah Lawrence came back with an 8-1 rally to take the lead for good; SLC clinched victory with the 25-19 set. Kelley polished off a career match with five kills and four aces in the set.

Final score: 25-19, 25-23, 17-25, 25-19.

In the loss, the Panthers were led by Logan Morrissey (FR/Woodbridge, CT) and her nine kills.

On Saturday, NJCU posted a 3-0 win (25-9, 25-20, 25-9).

In only the second meeting between the schools, NJCU hit .286 (31-13-63) as a team and uncorked 17 service aces.

Shege Haxhaj hit .438 with nine kills (9-2-16) and two blocks (one solo) to pace NJCU.

Alex Lally (JR/Sunnyvale, TX) recorded a team-high five kills for the Panthers.

Tied at 3-3 in the opening set, sophomore libero Jacqueline Romero, who defended nine digs in the win, served 11 consecutive points as NJCU reeled off a combined 12-0 run to claim a 15-3 margin.

Tied at 15-15 in game two, a combo block followed by kills, pushed the lead to 19-15. The hosts never looked back.

In the second match of the afternoon, CCNY topped the Panthers 3-0 (25-21, 29-27, 25-12).

CCNY put away 28 kills — 14 from middle hitter Angela Ubanwa who hit at a .379 rate (14-3-29) — and the Beavers staved off a pair of set points in the second game to sweep the neutral court match.

Victoria Blum (JR/Bronx, NY), who played well on the weekend, had 10 digs for Purchase.
