Road Weekend Tips Men’s Basketball Season

Panthers Drop Pair

New York, NY (Nov. 15, 2015) – The Purchase College men's basketball team started the 2015-16 campaign this weekend, facing Albertus Magnus Friday night and New York University in a Sunday late afternoon matchup.

Magnus (1-0) topped the Panthers 101-84 for its 58th consecutive victory on its home floor – the best active streak at any level in the NCAA. NYU fended off Purchase in a 75-53 final today.

On Friday, Shontaey Lovell scored a game-high 21 points and pulled down 17 rebounds to lead Magnus at The Nest inside the Cosgrove Marcus Messer Athletic Center.

In the season opener for both squads, the rule changes this year were evident in the 65 fouls called. Both the Falcons and the Panthers had multiple players foul out.

Offensively, four Falcons scored in double figures led by Lovell.

It was a balanced attack for the Panthers, with three players scoring in double figures. Forward Taylor Foster (SR/Greenburgh, NY) paced the Purchase attack with a double-double off the bench. Foster poured in 19 points on 7-of-9 shooting and pulled down a team-high 11 rebounds. Guard Creig Graves (SR/Harlem, NY) added 14 points courtesy of a 9-of-10 performance from the free-throw line, while backcourt mate Jose Reyes (SR/Bronx, NY) recorded 12 points and four assists.

As for today, NYU (1-0) overcame an early Panther lead, using a 6-0 run to take an 11-8 advantage in the first half.

The hosts would not relinquish the margin, taking a 31-20 lead at the break.

NYU standout Evan Kupferberg finished with game-highs of 19 points and eight rebounds.

Purchase (0-2) was led by Foster, who finished with 15 points and eight rebounds. Reyes added 10 points, two assists, two steals and one block in the loss at the Coles Sports Center in Manhattan.
