Panthers Come Up Short at Hat City Tournament

Osowiecki Named to All-Tournament Team

Danbury, NY (Nov. 21, 2015) – The Purchase College women's basketball team dropped two games over the weekend at the Hat City Tournament hosted by Western Connecticut State University.  The Panthers (0-3) dropped their contest with Roger Williams University, 88-44, before coming up short, 68-62, to Elms College.

Senior sensation Elizabeth Osowiecki (Franklin Square, N.Y.) was named to the All-Tournament Team after an impressive two-day showing.  The Panther forward tallied 32 points, while grabbing eight rebounds and five assists in the two games combined.

VS. Roger Williams
Roger Williams jumped out to an early 6-0 lead to start the game.  Despite their efforts, the Panthers struggled to keep up with the Hawk offense and by the end of the second quarter, Purchase was down 48-18.

The Hawks, now 1-2, were led by six players in double figures, headed by Angelica Ariola who poured in 14 points.  Rachel Battista, Anna Walther and Mary Beth Cahill each added 13 points for the winners.  Chipping in 10 points were Mariah Nicholas and Stephanie Bramante.

For Purchase, guards Allison Haugh (JR/New City, N.Y.) and Michelle Burke (SO/Central Valley, N.Y.) had a team-high 12 points apiece.  Osowiecki added 10 markers for the Panthers.

Bramante yanked in a game-high eight rebounds for the Hawks.

Panther forward Sierra Sangetti-Daniels (JR/Oneonta, N.Y.) pulled down a team-high six rebounds for Purchase.

Roger Williams went on to face Western Connecticut in the championship game on Saturday where they downed the host Colonials, 89-67.  Purchase headed to the consolation game on Saturday where they would face the Blazers of Elms College.

VS. Elms
Six different scorers contributed for Elms in the opening five minutes of the first quarter as the Blazers paced the Panthers, 12.6.

A 7-0 run from Purchase, fueled by four points from Osowlecki gave the Panthers a 13-12 advantage. Trailing 15-12, the Blazers regained control on a three-pointer from junior Emily Burr and a three-point play by senior JC Pickett to close the first quarter with an 18-17 lead.

A pair of free throw from Panther guard Brianna Saunders (SO/Bronx, N.Y.) handed the Panthers a 19-18 lead early in the second frame. Knotted at 27-27 at the 5:40 mark, the Blazers used four scorers to power a 9-2 run to build a 36-31 lead heading into halftime.

The Blazers opened the final period on an 8-2 run with a jumper from freshman Nakia Mabin giving Elms their largest lead, 60-45, with 6:59 remaining. The Panthers trimmed the deficit with a 9-1 run over the next two minutes until Elms sophomore Mackenzie LaRochelle poured in a quick four points, along with a pair of free throws from Burr to gain a 67-54 lead. Purchase fell short in a rally down the stretch as the Blazers secured the 68-62 victory.

Osowiecki stuffed the stat sheet with a game-high 22 points, connecting on 10-of-27, with six rebounds, six steals, four blocks, and three assists. Haugh scored 17 points with four rebounds, and sophomore Danielle Holmes (Warwick, N.Y.) contributed nine points and three rebounds.
