(Oct. 27, 2016) – In the season finale for York College (NY), the hosts edged visiting Purchase College in four sets (21-25, 25-19, 30-28, 25-23).
Cardinal seniors Tiandra Jones and Shauncia McClendon were both honored before the start of the game on Senior Night.
In the first set, the Cardinals lost an early lead and struggled to get it back, and the Panthers took the first set 25-21.
York managed to hang onto a lead in the second set, winning 25-19. The third set saw ten ties, with both teams fighting to maintain momentum, but the Cardinals came out on top, winning, 30-28. The Cardinals put on an impressive performance in the fourth set, hanging on to win 25-23.
York's Argenis Contreras finished with nine kills, two aces and three digs. Wilnoska Perez came off the bench to finish with three kills and two digs.
Purchase's offense was paced by
Kaitlyn Pillig (SO/Mamaroneck, NY),
Isis Gonzalez (FR/New York, NY) and
Maura Gribbins (SO/Buffalo, NY).
Pillig was the leader in kills (eight), while Gribbins led the way in assists (seven). She also led the way in digs (nine). Gonzalez added five kills.
Joetta Francis (FR/New York, NY) contributed two blocks to the defensive effort in the narrow defeat.
The Panthers conclude the regular season at home Saturday in a tri-match with Farmingdale State and the College of Mount Saint Vincent.
