USMMA Edges Purchase

Purchase, NY (Oct. 4, 2016) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy upended Purchase 3-0 Tuesday night.

The Mariners were backed by Michael Montesclaros' first goal of the season (10:44) in the first half and later a pair of second-period scores, including a penalty kick that sealed the win.

The first score was assisted by Matt McCurnin and helped USMMA hold a 1-0 advantage at halftime. The Mariner defense was then able to put together a strong final 45 minutes in closing out the victory to improve to 5-4-2, including 5-1 in the Skyline Conference. The loss dropped Purchase to 0-10-1 overall and 0-5-1 in the league.

The Mariners added two insurance goals in the second half. The PK score was netted by Hannes Rogers (29:58) and just slipped past the outstretched arms of Panther keeper Thomas Ogrodnik (JR/Washingtonville, NY). Ogrodnik was a bright spot for the Panthers, finishing with 11 saves, despite giving up three goals.

Purchase's Aaron Jones (FR/Highland Falls, NY), Dylan Hyman (SR/San Francisco, CA), Matthew Ebel (SR/Stony Brook, NY), Rob Cal (SO/Port Jervis, NY) and Keenan Wittman (FR/Exeter, NH) also performed well, recording shots in the contest against USMMA's standout defensive unit.

USMMA capped the scoring behind Michael Heckmuller's first of the season (23:48) midway through the second half. He was assisted by Jon Tarbox.

Mariner netminder Cory Maier earned the win in goal. Reserve Nolan Smith saw time late in the second half and finished with two saves.
