New York, NY
(Feb. 20, 2016) – Although a loss earlier in the day by St. Joseph's College-LI sealed Purchase's first-round playoff destination, the Panthers had plenty to play for Saturday night in a 77-75 victory at Yeshiva.
No. 5 Purchase (13-12, 11-9 Skyline Conference) capped the regular season by spoiling YU's Senior Day. The two will now face each other again Tuesday night at the Max Stern Athletic Center in Manhattan in the first round of the conference tournament. YU is the fourth seed. The loss dropped the Macs to 14-11, including 12-8 in the league.
Purchase scored the last six points of the first stanza to take the lead, 37-33, and never looked back. Yeshiva trailed by as many as 10 in the second half. The Maccabees made a run in the final minute of play, scoring the last five points of the contest, sparked by Shelby Rosenberg's history-making free throws as he scored the 1,000th point of his career.
However, it was not enough as Purchase hung on.
Julian Wright (SR/Mount Vernon, NY) powered Purchase with a season-high 21 points.
Taylor Foster (SR/Greenburgh, NY) added 16 and a team-high six rebounds.
Nicholas Jackson (SR/Brooklyn, NY) came off the bench and chipped in 15.
Rosenberg and Shaje Weiss each scored 18 points, with the former grabbing 11 rebounds and dishing out five assists in the loss.
The SJC-LI loss to Mount Saint Mary clinched the conference seedings.
Tuesday night's playoff game is set for 8 p.m. It will be Yeshiva's first home playoff game since the 1999-00 season.
