Panthers Edged by York

Jamaica, NY (March 15, 2016) – The Purchase College men's volleyball team was edged out by the York College Cardinals, 3-2, on Tuesday evening. The visiting Panthers dropped the non-conference match by a line score of 18-25, 25-18, 26-24, 20-25 and 15-12, dropping their season record to 10-12 overall.

York (11-16 overall) got off to a hot start in the opening set, taking a 7-3 lead and forcing Purchase to call an early timeout.  Purchase came back to make it 10-10 and ended up taking the first set 25-18.  The Cardinals started off strong once again in the second, leading 11-6.  They never gave up the lead again and won the second set, 25-18.

The third set saw both teams trading points throughout, but York ultimately came out on top, winning 26-24 after a late rally.  York was unable to keep momentum going, however, losing the fourth set, 20-25.

The final set was once again a battle but Randy Adams propelled the Cardinals to victory, getting a kill and a block on the final two points to clinch the match.

Riley Damerell (JR/Rochester, NY) led the way for Purchase with 20 kills.  Matthew McCarthy (SR/Fayetteville, NY) chipped in with 14 kills and eight digs, while Andrew Schwab (JR/Merrick, NY) tallied a team-best 31 assists.

York was led by Adams, who set a career high with 30 kills.  Jonathan Liao also had a career high with 50 assists and Paramvir Singh added 14 digs.

Purchase is back in action this Saturday at a Skyline Conference tri match hosted by the College of Mount St. Vincent.
