Bronx, NY
(March 16, 2016) – The Purchase College baseball team got back on track Wednesday afternoon. Junior right-hander
Miguel Reyes (Bronx, NY) tossed seven strong innings as the Panthers bounced back into the winner's circle with a 15-1 victory at Lehman College.
With the win, the Panthers advance to 5-6 overall while the Lightning drop to 2-11.
Reyes (1-1) allowed only four hits and two base on balls, while striking out three of the 27 batters he faced. In leading the Panthers to victory, he picked up his first win of the season.
Purchase scored 15 runs on 21 hits, led by rookie first baseman
Brian Cunningham (FR/Westbury, NY) who tallied five hits in six trips. Seniors
Brenden LaPorte (Farmington, CT) and
William Kaul (Eastchester, NY) joined the hit parade with four hits apiece, combining for five RBI. Second baseman
Gregory Walsh (FR/Bethpage, NY) chipped in another three hits while designated hitter
Mathew Chavez (SR/Brooklyn, NY) went 3-for-5 with an impressive five RBI.
Purchase jumped on Lehman early, scoring four runs in the third, five in the fourth and three in the fifth to stake a 12-0 lead. The Panthers added three more runs in the seventh to close out the game.
A Chavez two-run double opened up the scoring in the third inning. A Lightning balk would bring
Teofilo Ramirez (JR/Queens, NY) home to score and a single-RBI by Cunningham would put the Panthers up 4-0.
Purchase plated five runs in the fourth inning, led by LaPorte's two-run double to right field, Kaul's two-RBI single and Chavez's RBI double to center field.
The Panthers tacked on another three runs on four hits in the fifth, keyed by a Ramirez-single and a Cunningham-double to left field.
LaPorte and Kaul hit back-to-back doubles to lead-off the seventh inning. Chavez homered, driving in Kaul and concluding the scoring action for Purchase.
Lehman remained scoreless until the bottom of the eighth when sophomore center fielder Carlo Francisco blasted a solo home run over the left field yard.
Up next, the Panthers head to Fort Myers, FL for the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic.
