Purchase, NY
(March 9, 2016) – New Paltz started strong Wednesday afternoon on the diamond en route to a 6-1 win against host Purchase.
In the top half of the first, New Paltz scored an early, unearned run on an error in the infield by Purchase. The Hawks led off with a walk and a sacrifice bunt produced one out, with the runner advancing to second and then third and home on the ensuing error.
New Paltz starter Conor Donachie and Purchase starter
Joseph Stewart (JR/Garnerville, NY) both started strong, but the visiting Hawks scratched across a second run in the third, with two outs in the frame, backed by double, a balk by Stewart and a two-out RBI single by Tyler Bell that plated Nick DePietro from third.
Donachie allowed a single by
William Kaul (SR/Eastchester, NY) to start the third.
However, the fleet-footed Kaul was gunned down trying to steal second. The New Paltz starter allowed a second base runner in the inning, but managed to escape unscathed, protecting the 2-0 margin.
The visitors added a single run in the fourth, two in the sixth and one in the ninth.
Purchase scored one run in the sixth on an RBI single by
Patrick Rucci (JR/Cortlandt Manor, NY), which played
Brenden LaPorte (SR/Farmington, CT).
Kaul led the Panthers with two of the team's six hits.
Four players recorded multiple hits for New Paltz, including three-hitter Bell, who went 2-for-4 with an RBI. The Hawks finished with 10 hits.
Donachie earned the win, while Stewart took the loss. The Panthers sent six pitchers to the mound in the game. The Hawks finished off the matchup with two relievers after Donachie completed five innings of one-run baseball on the hill.
Purchase is now 2-3 on the spring. New Paltz is 1-2-1.
