CMSV Edges Purchase in First-Round Playoff

Dobbs Ferry, NY (April 27, 2016) – Despite holding a two-run lead in the fifth, Purchase softball fell to the College of Mount Saint Vincent Wednesday at Mercy College in the Skyline Conference Championships first round.

No. 3 CMSV came from behind twice for the 6-5 walk-off victory over the sixth-seeded Panthers in the single-elimination game. The Dolphins will face No. 2 Sage Friday.
For the first three innings, both starting pitchers kept the other off the scoreboard despite allowing multiple base runners in all three innings.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, CMSV's Danielle Maffei led off with a double to center, then advanced to third on a fly out to right, and then came around to score on a wild pitch to give the hosts a 1-0 lead.

However, in the top of the fifth, the Panthers rallied to score three runs, taking advantage of back-to-back infield errors by the Dolphins.

Purchase rookie Kelly Hayes (FR/Staten Island, NY) capitalized on the miscues, blasting a two-run homerun in the frame.

In the bottom of the inning, CMSV responded scoring four runs, three of which came on a three-run home run by Katie Moss, making it 4-3. The Dolphins would tack on a single run for a 5-3 advantage in the inning.

The sixth inning came and went with no runs for either team, but the drama resumed in the top of the seventh, after getting two quick outs, the Dolphins committed three errors, which allowed Purchase to score two unearned runs and tie the game at five. Purchase's Briana Leon (JR/Glen Cove, NY) provided the clutch single and RBI to make it 5-4 before Mary Adams (JR/Milton, PA) reached on the error for the tying run.

In the seventh, Maffei started the inning off, getting on base and then advanced to second on a single by Rachel Heizer, setting up CMSV with two runners on and one out. Laughridge would come to bat and after fouling off several pitches, she singled to center, chasing Maffei home with the winning run.
