(Sept. 7, 2016) – After losing its season opener, Kean University has reeled off three straight victories.
The Cougars posted an 8-0 win over host Purchase Wednesday night in the Panthers' home opener.
Purchase (0-3) turned in a solid effort, but ultimately the red-hot Cougars (3-1) generated more opportunities.
After seven minutes of back-and-forth scoreless play, the Cougars found the back of the net. Midfielder Robert Barrera scored his third goal of the season for a 1-0 advantage.
Kean added a second, first-half goal off the foot of forward Kenny Rocha. His first goal of the season was assisted by Sev Kherlopian in the ninth minute.
Shortly later, sub Kazari Trought headed his first goal of the fall off a double assist for a 3-0 lead.
Kean capped its first-period scoring off a corner-kick goal (Michael Vargas (1)) and a late goal from Jake Santos, taking a 5-0 lead into the break.
The Cougars added a trio of second-half goals en route to the win.
For Purchase, the Panthers were led by field captains and defenders
Connor Leavens (SR/Whitestone, NY) and
Anthony Iurillo (JR/Flushing, NY). Starting keeper
Thomas Ogrodnik (JR/Washingtonville, NY) finished with 10 saves.
Kean goalie Brad Watkins collected the win. He tallied four saves.
The Panthers return to action Friday night at home, when they welcome the City College of New York at 7 p.m. The contest is part of a Purchase soccer doubleheader. The women kick first at 5 p.m., welcoming neighboring rival Manhattanville.
