(Jan. 25, 2017) – The Purchase College men's volleyball team opened the 2017 season with a non-conference loss to Brooklyn College, 3-1, Tuesday evening at the West Quad Center. Set scores were 25-23, 25-14, 22-25 and 25-20.
After edging Purchase (0-1) in the opening set, 25-23, Brooklyn (1-2) rolled in the second set, 25-14.
Purchase avoided the sweep by coming out hot in the third set, jumping out to a 9-4 lead to start the game. The Panthers maintained a lead through the rest of the third set despite a late Bulldog push that cut the Purchase lead to 24-22. The Panthers ended the third set with a

Trailing 12-9 in the fourth set, Brooklyn tied the score with three straight points capped by an Eddie Peng block, building the momentum back in the Bulldogs' favor. Following a Purchase point off a block by
Andrew Schwab (SR/Merrick, NY) and
Luke Kubisch (SO/Delmar, NY), the Bulldogs scored seven straight for a 19-13 advantage. Brooklyn closed out the set and the match on a Titus Vaughn kill.
Carges paced the Panther offense with 13 kills and two service aces.
Andrew Schwab totaled a team-best 16 assists and seven digs, while rookie
Andreo Otiniano (FR/Mamaroneck, NY) tallied a match-high six services aces.
Riley Damerell (SR/Rochester, NY) chipped in with five kills, eight assists and three digs.
For Brooklyn, junior middle hitter Rudy Zhao led all players with 15 kills. Sophomore and reigning CUNYAC Rookie of the Year, Titus Vaughn, racked up nine kills, two service aces, two solo blocks, and a block assist on the evening. Junior setter Eddie Peng finished with 30 assists on the evening.
Up next, Purchase is set to host NJCU in its home-opener match on Feb. 1 at 7 p.m.
