Kayla Ortiz combined for an impressive 34 points but a six-point second quarter by Purchase College doomed the Panthers in a 78-46 Skyline Conference loss to the United States Merchant Marine Academy on Saturday.
Minaya (San Fernando, CA) finished with 17 markers, including four baskets from beyond the arc.
Ortiz (Brooklyn, NY) netted another 17 for Purchase and totaled a team-best four assists. Sophomore
Lisa Kentris led the Panther defense with seven boards.
With the scored tied at 12 after the first quarter, the Panthers cold as the Mariners outscored Purchase 18-6 in the second to put the game out of reach.
USMMA (9-7, 5-6 SKY) stayed hot in the second half and blew open a lead that grew to as much as 24 points in the fourth quarter.
A total of nine players scored for the Mariners, led by Rachel Wehlburg double-double performance. Wehlburg had a game-high 21 points, 11 rebounds and a steal.
Purchase drops to 2-15 overall and 1-11 in the Skyline with the loss. The Panthers will resume action on Feb. 2 at St. Joseph's College (L.I.).
