Bronx, NY
(Oct. 28, 2017) – There are often no silver-lining victories when it comes to sports, let alone playoff contests, but both Purchase and the College of Mount Saint Vincent battled for 120 minutes Saturday in the Skyline Conference Tournament First Round in a game that would ultimately be decided in the shootout.
The sixth-seeded Panthers came up just short, falling 3-2 in penalty kicks, as the Purchase seniors, despite the loss, played a memorable and hard-fought finale. For seniors
Kayode Tyler (SR/Nyack, NY),
Joel Viveros (SR/Valhalla, NY),
Liam Nethercott (SR/Amenia, NY) and
Anthony Iurillo (SR/Whitestone, NY), the final score was tough, but the four left it all on the field, as did their teammates.
It was Purchase's seventh overtime game of the fall season, including its fifth in six games.
The third-seeded Dolphins may have won the game, but there were no losers on this day.
The Mount advanced in the playoffs and continue Wednesday in the semifinals against St. Joseph's College-LI.
Neither team gave an inch, as this contest was a defensive battle throughout. The Dolphins had standout performances from Joseph Llamuca and Luciano Cirelli, while the Panthers were paced defensively by captains Iurillo and Tyler.
After two periods and two extra-time periods of play, it still was not enough to decide a winner.
Both goal keepers set the tone early. They both saved the first penalty kicks by the opposing team. Both CMSV and Purchase went on to trade successful attempts. Purchase immediately answered to tie it up at two apiece. The keepers then traded saves again, leaving Llamuca with a chance to win the game for the Dolphins. The senior answered the call to propel the hosts.
Yianni Amvrosiatos (JR/Warwick, NY) and
Rob Cal (JR/Port Jervis, NY) had successful makes for Purchase in the shootout. Amvrosiatos and Iurillo led the team with four shots apiece.
Jordan Meade (FR/Olivebridge, NY) finished with 10 saves in another terrific effort for the rookie netminder.
CMSV's Padelis Astrinidis earned the win in goal. He finished with eight saves.
