Strong Start Propels Western

Danbury, CT (Nov. 21, 2017) – The Purchase women's basketball team ran into a hot shooting Western Connecticut squad Tuesday evening at the O'Neill Center's Feldman Arena. The hosts shot 43 percent from the field en route to taking a 129-63 non-conference victory and handing the visiting Panthers their first loss of the season.

Junior guard Jancy Sherwood netted a game-high 36 points, while senior guard Kaitlyn LaBonte chipped in with 28 for the Colonials (2-1). Western tallied a record-breaking 129 points after shattering the old school mark with 128 against Mitchell College just one game ago.

Rookie forward Asiah Knight also notched a key contribution for the Colonials with a double-double on the strength of 16 points and 13 rebounds.

For Purchase (2-1), junior guard Amber Jones (Bronx, NY) paced the squad with 19 points and six rebounds, while senior guard Kayla Ortiz (Brooklyn, NY) added 15 points and a team-high five assists. Rounding out the double-digit scorers for the Panthers was junior guard Amber Yarter (Albany, NY) with 10 total points.

The Colonials raced out to a 36-17 lead in the opening quarter. The contest began with a 27-6 run sparked by a LaBonte three-pointer.

The hosts widened the gap to 64-28 midway through the second stanza when LaBonte took a nifty feed from sophomore guard Kathiana Monestime and scooped a layup off the glass.
The margin would balloon to 55 points when Sherwood knocked down one of her six trifectas to close out the third quarter.

WestConn would not let up in the fourth as the barrage from downtown continued when rookie forward Sydney Gouveia hit off an assist from classmate Megan Hasty, extending the lead to 127-60.

For the game, the Colonials buried 18-of-21 (85.6%) from the charity stripe and committed just 11 turnovers compared to the Panthers 12-of-22 (54.5%) from the line and 38 errors.

Purchase will resume action after the holiday break on Nov. 28 for the Skyline Conference opener against the United States Merchant Marine Academy.
