Ortiz Pours in 25 Points in Victory Over Yeshiva

Teams with Jones as Panthers Earn First Skyline Win

Purchase, NY (Dec. 7, 2017)Kayla Ortiz was relatively quiet by her standards offensively in the first half.

After halftime was a different story.

And the full body of work translated into a 25-point performance for the Purchase guard. Ortiz (SR/Brooklyn, NY), who scored eight points in the first 20 minutes, capped the night with 17 second-half points. Her breakout second half helped Purchase down visiting Yeshiva University, 73-61.

The win improves Purchase to 3-5 overall and 1-3 in Skyline Conference play. The loss puts Yeshiva at 2-7 and 1-4, respectively.

A six-point lead in the first quarter (21-15) propelled the Panthers. Purchase maintained its lead over the visiting Macabees in both halves of the game.

Ortiz' backcourt partner, Amber Jones (JR/Bronx, NY), led scoring in the first half with a total of 10 points. Ortiz and Amber Yarter (SO/Albany, NY) trailed close behind, as they both netted eight. Jones and Ortiz also combined for six assists.

After finishing the first quarter down six points, the Macabees responded in the second quarter. Nicole Bick fueled the team, posting 17 points in the first half. Michal Alge and Celia Cohen each contributed seven rebounds.

Nevertheless, the Panthers stayed ahead in the second quarter. Jones, Ortiz, Yarter and Nyasia Harris (JR/ South Fallsburg, NY) combined for 14 points, finishing the first half up 35-31.

Purchase scored 19 points in the third quarter and boosted their lead to 54-44, thanks largely to Ortiz and Jones.

The good play carried over into the fourth, where Purchase scored 19 more points as a unit, sealing their first league win of 2017.  

In the victory, Harris grabbed a team-high 13 boards. She also netted 12 points in a nice double-double effort.

Ortiz shot 10 of 19 from the field and added five steals to her credit. Yarter chipped in 10 points and five rebounds, while Jones contributed 18 points, nine rebounds and a game-high six steals – a terrific all-around effort for the junior.  

Yeshiva had two players finish in double figures offensively. The visitors were paced by Bick and her 28 points. Alge recorded a double-double of 12 points and a game-high 16 rebounds. Cohen also collected 15 boards.

The Panthers closeout 2017 Saturday on the road at Bard College. Game time is slated for 3 p.m.
