(Feb. 4, 2017) – The Purchase College men's volleyball team split a pair of matches on Saturday, defeating host City College of New York, 3-0 (25-22, 25-21, 25-21), and losing to Wilkes University, 3-2 (25-27, 25-19, 25-21, 22-25, 15-7).
Purchase (2-2 overall) opened the morning with the three-set shutout over CCNY. Seniors
Kevin Carges (Brockport, NY) and
Andrew Schwab (Merrick, NY) paced the Panther offense against the Beavers with seven kills apiece. Schwab finished the match with an impressive .583 hitting percentage.
Senior setter
Riley Damerell (Rochester, NY) chipped in with five kills off seven attempts (.571) and tied with teammate
Luke Kubisch (SO/Delmar, NY) for a team-best three service aces.
In the second match, Purchase won the first set 27-25 before dropping the next two, 25-19 and 25-21, respectively. The Panthers rallied in the fourth set to claim the 25-22 win, forcing a fifth and deciding set. Wilkes claimed the match with a 15-7 victory in the final set.
Carges totaled a match-high 21 kills against the Colonels. Rookie ace
Andreo Otiniano (FR/Mamaroneck, NY) notched a team-best five service aces and Damerell added another eight kills and five digs to the books.
Kubisch finished the match with a Panther-best .545 attacking percentage (6-for-11) and combined with Carges and junior
Christopher Williams (Valley Spring, NY) for nine total blocks.
The Panthers return to their home court on Wednesday to host Lehman College in a non-conference match starting at 7 p.m.
