Men’s Volleyball Sweeps York; Improves to 10-4

Purchase, NY (March 15, 2017) – Purchase men's volleyball rattled off another victory Wednesday night, improving to 10-4 this spring.

The Panthers, which went 2-1 on the weekend in the Keuka Invitational, have showed no signs of slowing up. Purchase swept visiting York College (NY) 3-0 tonight at home.

The hosts bested the Cardinals 25-23, 25-18, 25-19, surviving all of the long rallies en route to another win.

Purchase was led offensively by Kevin Carges (SR/Brockport, NY), Andrew Schwab (SR/Merrick, NY) and Luke Kubisch (SO/Delmar, NY). The trio posted 18, eight and five kills, respectively. Carges notched the match high in the victory, while adding one ace, one assist and 10 digs, second only in that category to libero Christopher Williams (JR/Valley Stream, NY). Williams finished with 11 digs to pace the defense for Purchase.

Riley Damerell (SR/Rochester, NY) added seven digs defensively. He also recorded one ace and a match-high 29 assists. Schwab added 10 assists in a double-double effort. Fellow Panther Ethan Huang (FR/Queens, NY) posted two blocks on the night, while Austin Lynch (SO/Verona, NY) was terrific in serve with three aces.

Purchase's Giovanni Spadaro (SR/Melville, NY), Andreo Otiniano (FR/Mamaroneck, NY) and Griffin Rapp (JR/Rochester, NY) also performed well in the match.

The night featured a steady back-and-forth play between the two clubs. The two were tied 4-4 and 6-6 early in the first set. The Panthers started to make a push and took a 10-8 advantage, but the score would be tied once again at 21-all. Shortly later, Purchase sealed it, winning the set by two points.

The late rally carried over into the second set, with the Panthers holding an early lead, but York rebounded to take a 7-6 advantage.

The Panthers were up 11-10 and 14-11 in the second set and then took off from there behind the serve of Damerell, closing out the seven-point win to go up 2-0.

In the third, Purchase led 8-6, but the Cardinals chipped away, closing to within 12-10 early. The score would be tied again at 14-14 before the service game played a role. Lynch helped the Panthers take a 19-16 lead on his serve and the hosts never looked back.

York (4-15) was led by Akeem George and his 12 kills. Teammate Adil Manji added 13 assists, while Kevin Campbell posted 11 digs in defeat.

The Panthers will now travel to St. Joseph's College-LI this weekend for a tri-match.
