Hackettstown, NJ
(March 21, 2017) – Inclement weather delayed the opening of the 2017 season by a couple of weeks, but when the Panthers hit the field for Tuesday's opener at Centenary College, they didn't waste any time getting to work – and for that matter, the team didn't look at all fazed by the bumps in the schedule.
Purchase (1-0) slammed the Cyclones 17-7, putting a whirlwind of their own on the hosts behind
Zoe Hines (JR/Maplewood, NJ). Hines not only tied her single-game record for goals in a game, but also achieved the 100th goal of her career in the process. Hines netted seven goals, the last of which put her in the 100 club, along with
Samantha Rich.
Hines totaled eight points on seven goals and one assist for the Panthers. Centenary's Abby Voelkner totaled five points on five goals in the Tuesday afternoon defeat. Teammate Juliana Arias added two points on a goal and assist for the Cyclones, who fell to 1-3 overall.
Hines scored the game's first two goals, as Purchase held a 9-5 lead after the first half.
Voelkner helped Centenary rebound from an early 3-0 deficit, as she netted back-to- back goals that cut the Panthers lead to 3-2 with 12:43 remaining in the opening stanza.
After three unanswered goals over the next three minutes pushed the Panthers back in front at 6-2, Arias scored the first goal of her career. Then Nicole Soriero scored a goal for the hosts, but the Panthers responded with two more scores to extend their lead to the largest of the game at 9-4.
In the second half, the Panthers opened with six unanswered goals to seal it. Centenary finally found the back of the cage when Voelkner again scored back-to-back goals.
The Panthers received plenty of offensive in the season's first game, not only from Hines.
Kelly Turtell (JR/Farmingdale, NY) finished with four goals, while
Meaghan Gillen (FR/Port Jervis, NY) added three.
Madi Smith (JR/Lagrangeville, NY) and
Virginia Redlon (JR/Carmel, NY) contributed two and one, respectively.
Hines' 100th was the second to last score of the game for Purchase. It made it 16-7 Panthers.
Purchase's
Cynthia Plackis (JR/East Northport, NY) had six ground balls to lead the way in that category. The keeper also made six saves in the win.
Defensively, Redlon added a team-best four caused turnovers, while Hines and Turtell paced the team with four draw controls apiece.
