Purchase, NY
(April 13, 2017) – Western Connecticut State University posted an 11-1 nine inning final over Purchase Thursday.
It was a game early at Purchase, but the Colonial bats put together a big six-run fifth inning en route to the non-conference win. The victory improved their overall record to 11-10 and dropped Purchase to 5-12 on the spring.
Panther starting pitcher
Jonathan Deacon (JR/Lindenhurst, NY) retired the side in order in the top half of the first.
The Panthers had a one-out base runner in the bottom half, courtesy of a
Gavin Brien (FR/Brooklyn, NY) single, but stranded him despite a sharp shot up the middle off the bat of
Teofilo Ramirez (SR/Queens, NY). Ramirez' liner turned into a pretty 6-6-3 double play by WestConn shortstop Bill Buscetto.
Deacon pitched around a base runner himself in the top of the second, keeping the game scoreless as both starters started strong on the mound.
WestConn's Kyle Cole matched zeroes in the bottom of the second. The Panthers had a one-out base runner on a single down the third baseline by
Taylor Ringold (SR/South Setauket, NY), but a pickoff play erased the runner. Cole regrouped and finished off the inning.
Deacon had to do the same in the bottom of the third, albeit limiting the damage as opposed to walking away completely unscathed. He loaded the bases with no outs, allowing two singles and a walk. A bases loaded walk with one out brought home the game's first run, but Deacon recovered and got two infield popups to end the threat.
The Colonials extended the lead on a pair of solo homers in the top of the fourth. Bryan Harper and Clete LoRusso hit the home runs to make it 3-0 in favor of the visitors.
Jake Scimone (SO/Bayport, NY) relieved Deacon in the fifth, inheriting runners on first and second. WestConn would bring home six runs in the frame to break the game open.
Purchase got on the board in the bottom of the fifth on an infield single and RBI by
Elijah Tait (FR/Teaneck, NJ).
WestConn added two runs in the sixth after reloading the bases. Moe Ortiz doubled to left to plate two more.
Neal Koch (SO/New City, NY) pitched the seventh, eighth and ninth in relief for Purchase.
Lost in the defeat was a tremendous leaping diving catch by
Ryan Aponte (SR/Bronx, NY) in center field that ended a threat in the seventh. Aponte made several nice grabs late in the game.
Kole earned the win for WestConn. He pitched seven innings, struck out two and walked none.
