(April 12, 2017) – Coming off a pair of tough losses to CSI, the Purchase College softball team got right back to work Wednesday at Sarah Lawrence College, sweeping the Gryphons in a Skyline Conference matchup.
SLC opened with a two-run lead in game one, but the Panthers rallied to tie the game in the seventh and outlasted the hosts 4-3 in 10 innings.
Briana Leon (SR/Glen Cove, NY) provided the clutch two-run, game-tying single in the seventh and her sacrifice fly gave visiting Purchase the 3-2 lead in the 10th.
The thrilling game-one victory paved the way for a 6-3 game-two win, and the sweep.
In the process, Purchase improved to 5-9, including 5-5 in league play. Sarah Lawrence is now 5-19 and 2-13.
In game one, Purchase notched three hits in the first two innings, while both sides were dismissed in order in both the third and fourth frames.
Purchase did damage in the top of the seventh, using three hits to score a pair of runs and level the game, 2-2.
In the eighth and ninth innings, neither team advanced a runner past second base.
The international tiebreaker rule went into effect in the 10th inning, entitling each team to a runner at second base to start their turn at the plate.
Enter Leon and the comeback.
In game two, fresh off its clutch game-one win, Purchase scored two runs in the first inning. The Gryphons got one back in the bottom of the frame.
The Panthers increased the lead to 5-1 after an inning and a half, and both sides struggled with fading light in a race to finish the game.
Purchase scored what would be the day's final run in the fourth inning, and the Gryphons went hitless over the final four innings.
Kelly Hayes (SO/Staten Island, NY) doubled in the first run for the Panthers and went on to have a terrific second game of the doubleheader. She later doubled twice more to make it 5-1 and 6-3, respectively. Her second double came in the second inning and the final smash came in the fourth.
Hayes collected three hits and three RBI in the win.
Lisa Kentris (SO/Latham, NY) also went 3-for-4, scoring three runs.
Rachel Stockinger (FR/Putnam Valley, NY) earned her first win of the season in the circle for the Panthers.

Nicole Fortuna (SR/New Rochelle, NY) earned the game-one win. The reigning Skyline Co-Pitcher of the Week is now 4-2 on the season.
