Purchase, NY (April 22, 2017) – Purchase baseball stayed hot in league play, picking up two wins against the College of Mount Saint Vincent on Saturday afternoon.
Backed by an impressive pitching performance from
Joseph Stewart (SR/Theills, NY), the Panthers topped the Dolphins 8-2 in the opener. Rookie closer
John Fitzgerald (FR/Wantagh, NY) was strong on the hill in game two, as Purchase claimed a 9-3 victory to complete the sweep.
Purchase is now 9-14 overall and 6-9 in the Skyline. The Dolphins fall to 8-25 overall and 4-10 in the league.
Game One: Purchase 8, CMSV 2
With the runners at first and third in the top of the second inning, Fitzgerald singled to left field to score
Patrick Rucci (SR/Cortlandt Manor, NY) for the first run of the game.
CMSV tied the game with a run in the bottom of the fourth with a RBI single from John McEwan.
With the game tied 1-1 after five innings, the Panthers broke open their second lead of the game with seven runs in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings combined.
Rucci paced the Panther offense in the opener, going 3-for-5 with three doubles, two runs and one RBI.

Taylor Ringold (SR/South Setauket, NY) went 2-for-4, while
Michael Tecci (SR/Stratford, NY),
Teofilo Ramirez (SR/Queens, NY) and
Gavin Brien (FR/Brooklyn, NY) chipped in with one hit and one RBI apiece.
Stewart (2-2) picked up the win for Purchase after 7.2 innings on the mound. He allowed only two runs off eight hits, while striking out four and walking one of the 31 batters he faced.
Game Two: Purchase 9, CMSV 3
Game two would see three ties and four lead changes over nine innings of action before Purchase's six-run rally erupted in the 10th inning.
Fitzgerald batted in the winning run with a triple to right center field, and later came around to score ona
Elias Sayad (SR/Wayne, NJ) single to left field. Brien singled up the middle to score Sayad and
Nick Tuozzola (SO/Milford, CT), and Ramirez capped the inning highlights with a 2-RBI double to right center.
Fitzgerald (1-0) led the Panther offense as well as defense. After batting in the victory run, he continued his hot streak on the mound and closed the game with three straight outs. The rookie pitcher went 3.1 innings, notching four strikeouts and giving up only one hit without a single run.
Tecci was the team pacesetter from the plate, totaling four hits off six appearances with a double and two RBI.
Purchase resumes action on the road tomorrow against Mount Saint Mary College.
