Purchase, NY (April 8, 2017) – Undefeated Maritime College slipped by Purchase Saturday, taking both ends of a Skyline Conference doubleheader, 4-2 and 7-1, respectively.
Game One: Maritime 4, Purchase 2
Maritime took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning as Stephen Semler hit a RBI single to left field followed by an Aaron Schiavoni RBI double to the left side.
Purchase answered back in the bottom of the fourth inning with a
Taylor Ringold (SR/South Setauket, NY) 2-RBI triple to right field. Seniors
Patrick Rucci (Cortlandt Manor, NY) and
Teofilo Ramirez (Queens, NY) came around to score the first and second runs for the Panthers, tying the game at 2-apiece.
With only one out left in the top of the eighth, the Privateers got on base with a Phil Rosso single to shortstop. Joe Scerra was walked which forced a Panther pitching change. Rookie Panther
Lorenzo Lagares (FR/Queens, NY) replaced
William Amendola (FR/Northport, NY) on the mound, and with Maritime runners at first and second, a Purchase error would grant the game-winning run.
Anthony D'Ancona (3-1) pitched a complete 9-inning game for the Privateers. He gave up six hits and two runs while striking out nine, earning his third win of the season in the 4-2 victory.
Purchase starter
Joseph Stewart (SR/Theills, NY) went six innings strong, while Amendola (0-1) was tagged with the loss after 1.2 innings in relief. Lagares closed the game for Purchase with no hits and one strikeout against six batters.
Game Two: Maritime 7, Purchase 1
Similar to the opener, Maritime jumped out to a 2-0 lead early in the game. The Privateers added another two runs in the third inning before Purchase got on the board with a run in the bottom of the fourth.
Maritime starting pitcher Matthew Paghidas (4-1) held the Panther offense to just one hit over the next two innings, while his teammates put in work at the plate. The visitors batted in another three runs in the fifth and sixth innings combined to secure the 7-1 victory.
Paghidas earned his fourth win of the season after an impressive six innings on the mound for Maritime. He allowed only four hits while striking out six of the 22 batters he faced.
In defeat, starting pitcher
Dominic Micara (SO/Massapequa, NY) picked up his first career loss for Purchase.
Up next, the Panthers head to the SUNY College at Old Westbury for a Skyline doubleheader starting at noon on Sunday.
