Softball Clinches Postseason Berth in Doubleheader Sweep of YU

Playoffs Open Thursday at Mount Saint Mary College

Bronx, NY (May 2, 2017) – The Purchase College softball team swept their way into the league postseason Tuesday night at Fordham University, downing Yeshiva in both ends of a Skyline Conference twin bill to close the regular season.

Now, the Panthers will head to top-seeded Mount Saint Mary – the host of the conference tournament – to face the Sage Colleges at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday.

Purchase posted two, five-inning finals Tuesday night. The Panthers won the opener 11-1 and closed out the sweep in an 18-0 game-two win.

In the opening game, the Panthers scored four runs in the first inning to take a commanding lead.

Yeshiva had a rally going in the home half of the first. With two runners on and one out, catcher Sarah Hiller doubled to right field, scoring a run to pull YU within three. However, the Maccabees could not push a second run across in the first. From that point on, the Panthers scored 11 unanswered runs, while the Maccabees could not get a runner on base for the remainder of the game.

The Panthers collected 12 hits, including three from Lisa Kentris (SO/Latham, NY). Kelly Hayes (SO/Staten Island, NY) added three RBI. Nicole Fortuna (SR/New Rochelle, NY) struck out 10 and earned the win in the circle.

In game two, Purchase (10-18, 8-10) scored 10 runs in the top of the third to break the game open. The Panthers only gave up two Yeshiva (2-20, 0-18 Skyline) hits to earn the sweep.

The Panthers totaled 16 hits in game two, including three from Victoria Capone-Froio (JR/Yonkers, NY) and three more from Kentris. The duo added two RBI apiece. Hayes, Rachel Stockinger (FR/Putnam Valley, NY) and Fortuna also recorded two RBI in the win.

Stockinger got the victory in the circle. The rookie struck out four and allowed only two hits over five innings.
