Old Westbury
(May 2, 2017) – A back-and-forth battle between host Old Westbury and visiting Purchase went down to the wire Tuesday.
OW would go on to hold on, defeating Purchase 17-13 in the Skyline Conference women's lacrosse first-round postseason matchup.
In the process, No. 3 Old West advanced to its second straight semifinal. Westbury (7-9) will travel Thursday to Patchogue, New York to take on second-seeded St. Joseph's College-LI in a rematch of the 2016 league semifinal.
No. 6 Purchase finishes its season at 5-8.
Natasha Treuman broke the scoring ice 3:33 in to give Old Westbury the early 1-0 lead. Sara Bey scored 1:51 later for Old Westbury to double the advantage (2-0).
Imani Blake scored her sixth goal of the season for Old Westbury to push the lead to three (3-0) at 23:30.
Emma Porter (JR/Homer, NY) put Purchase on the board 41 seconds later to slice the lead to three (3-1). Old Westbury used a 4-1 run from 20:22 to 9:25, with two goals by Halle Johnson and one by Danielle Weir, to take a first-half high five goals lead (7-2).
Purchase netted three goals over the final 6:39 of the opening half to head into the half trailing by two (7-5).
Zoe Hines (JR/Maplewood, NJ) had two of the team's goals over that stretch.
Kelly Turtell (JR/Farmingdale, NY) also found the back of the net.
But OW leapt out to a 9-5 margin early in the second half before the visitors capitalized on a man-up situation at 21:16, as
Meaghan Gillen (FR/Port Jervis, NY) scored a goal to trim the deficit to three (9-6).
From 17:45 to 16:45, Old Westbury put away three goals to extend its lead to a game-high six goals (12-6).
Purchase used a 5-0 run, including two goals by Hines and two from Porter, to pull within one with 8:44 showing on the second-half clock (12-11).
Old Westbury scored two more goals courtesy of Johnson at 7:11 and Bey finishing at 5:57 to make it a 14-11 game.
Purchase chipped away at the lead after Turtell scored a goal with 1:45 left (14-12).
However, OW bounced back again, increasing its lead behind late goals from Treuman and Bey.
Porter scored Purchase's final goal with 22 seconds left before one final OW goal settled the score at 17-13.
Treuman paced Old Westbury with four goals, four ground balls, four draw controls and two caused turnovers.
Porter finished with game-high five goals to go along with two draw controls and one assist to pace Purchase. Hines contributed four goals and three draw controls while Turtell scored two goals and controlled a game-high seven draws.
