Purchase, NY
(Sept. 13, 2017) – A physical tilt between visiting John Jay College and Purchase College went to the hosts Wednesday night.
Backed by a sterling offensive performance from forward
Rob Cal (JR/Port Jervis, NY), the Panthers reeled off their second straight shutout – a 3-0 victory for the second consecutive game.
Cal scored his first and second goals of the season in the opening 45 minutes.
In between, breakout newcomer
Kayode Tyler (SR/Nyack, NY) netted his second of the season on a penalty kick for a swift 2-0 lead in the first half.
In the fast-paced matchup, the Panthers, coming off their first victory of the fall last week against another CUNY, non-conference rival in CCNY, were dominant against the Bloodhounds.
In the first half, Purchase and John Jay each recorded seven shots apiece, but the Panthers managed six on goal, while limiting the visitors to four – capitalizing on two outstanding headers from Cal. The first of which was assisted by Tyler, who goes by the nickname "Ky," and
Oliver Dubreus (JR/Cornwall, NY), and the second from tri-captain
Anthony Iurillo (SR/Whitestone, NY).
On the free kick, Iurillo fed Cal in front of the goal for the commanding 3-0 lead before halftime.
Eight minutes into the second half, Purchase's defense and the play of keeper
Jordan Meade (FR/Olivebridge, NY) preserved the shutout. Meade made an outstanding save on a breakaway. The freshman has played well between the pipes in the action he has seen this season, recording time in both victories.
The rest of the way, Purchase controlled the tempo in the midfield and on the defensive end to seal the victory – the first of Meade's collegiate career in goal. He finished with 14 saves.
In addition to Meade, Cal, Tyler, Iurillo and Dubreus, fellow starters
Yianni Amvrosiatos (JR/Warwick, NY),
Eslam Ellisy (FR/Nyack, NY),
Stephen Gueye (SO/Eastchester, NY),
Liam Nethercott (SR/Amenia, NY),
Favian Reyes (SO/Port Chester, NY) and
Joseph Iurillo (FR/Whitestone, NY) made strong contributions in the victory. Tri-captain
Greg Lorenz (JR/Massapequa, NY) also saw time off an injury in a reserve role.
Purchase is now 2-3 on the season. The loss drops John Jay to 1-3.
