Fast Start Propels SJC-LI

Purchase, NY (Sept. 18, 2017) – A trio of first-half goals helped St. Joseph's College-LI earn its first Skyline Conference victory of the season Monday night at Purchase College.

The fast start carried the Golden Eagles to a 4-0 final against the Panthers. In the victory, SJC-LI is now 3-3 overall, including 1-0 in conference play. The loss drops Purchase 1-4 on the fall and 1-1 in the Skyline.

The visitors outshot Purchase 9-4 in the first half, but capitalized on three strikes.

SJC-LI's Christina Gagliardi accounted for three shots and two goals in the first half, including the first (15:39) and third (32:41) goals of the half. She has nine goals this season.

In between, Kristin Carroll netted her first of the season (19:18).

In the second half, the Golden Eagles were able to play keep away and control the tempo en route to the win. They added an insurance goal in the 79th minute off the foot of Jaclyn O'Shaughnessy on a corner kick. Like Carroll, it is her first of the season.

Although the Panthers played well offensively in the midfield, moving the ball well, Purchase struggled to finish against SJC-LI's defense.

For the contest, SJC-LI outshot Purchase, 16-8 (8-2 on goal).

The hosts were led by midfielders Brett Robison (SO/Franklin Square, NY), Emma Porter (SR/Homer, NY), Bernice Rojas (FR/New York, NY), Tori La Fata (JR/East Meadow, NY) and Breann McKeon (JR/Staten Island, NY). Forward Cerissa DiValentino (FR/New Paltz, NY) also performed well in defeat. DiValentino and Porter shared the team lead with two shots apiece.

Purchase returns to action Wednesday at home, when the Panthers welcome non-conference opponent Bard College to the campus for a 7 p.m. start.
