Oswego, NY
(Sept. 2-3, 2017) – The Purchase College men's soccer team battled in the Oswego Tournament over the weekend and are ready for their home opener tonight against SUNY New Paltz.
The Panthers dropped two games on the holiday weekend against two, top-flight teams, but showed their mettle in competing with both Houghton and host Oswego. Houghton escaped with a 3-2 overtime victory on Saturday. Oswego captured a 6-1 victory on Sunday in the pair of non-conference matchups.
A pair of freshmen teamed up to lead Houghton. Gabe Vanwyk got the game-winner just two minutes into the extra session off an assist from fellow first-year player Noah Ewing.
Purchase tied it on an unassisted
Yianni Amvrosiatos (JR/Warwick, NY) goal and then lead on a
Anthony Iurillo (SR/Whitestone, NY) score off a penalty kick in the 75th minute.
But Houghton answered by behind Andrew Bussey, who was assisted by Ben DiCrasto in the 85th minute at Laker Turf Stadium.
On Sunday, Iurillo opened the scoring on a PK and Purchase led 1-0, but the hosts reeled off a scoring surge en route to take the win in the Oswego State Classic.
Oswego is now 2-0 on the year and is outscoring its opponents 11-1. After scoring five in the season-opener, the Lakers went for six on Sunday.
Purchase opened the scoring at 3:21 after a Laker hand ball was called in the box. At 19:41, Oswego would even the score with a penalty kick of its own. A foul on the Panthers in the box led to a Connor Lunduski tally.
Later in the first half, Thomas Osborn sent a ball through the box to the foot of Logan Sperano who ripped a shot past three defenders to give the Lakers their first lead of the day. Oswego would take a two-goal edge into the break as Lunduski passed from outside the top left of the box to Karebo Wilson on the right for a goal at 35:55.
The hosts finished with three, second-half goals.
The Panthers will look to regroup tonight in another non-conference affair.
