Kayla Ortiz and
Amber Jones combined for 40 points and 12 assists, as the Purchase women's basketball team defeated Sarah Lawrence College, 84-37, in Skyline Conference action Wednesday evening.
With the win, Purchase advances to 5-6 overall and 3-4 in the league. SLC drops to 1-10 overall, 0-7 in the Skyline.
Ortiz (SR/Brooklyn, NY) and
Jones (JR/Bronx, NY) led a balanced Purchase attack with 20 points apiece. Jones added 11 rebounds, six assists and four steals to the book as well. Rookie guard
DeJeana Peoples (FR/New York, NY) netted an impressive 11 points, four steals and two assists off the bench.
Nyasia Harris (JR/South Fallsburg, NY) and
Amber Yarter (JR/Albany, NY) each scored eight points, with Harris also amassing a game-high 15 rebounds.
The Panthers jumped ahead early and led 27-11 at the first quarter break. Purchase kept the momentum going in the second quarter, outshooting the Gryphons 22-7 to finish the first half with a 49-18 lead.
Purchase did not let up after the half, stretching the lead to as much as 55 points in the final quarter.
The Panthers shot 44 percent from the field overall, including 21-47 in the first half. SLC was held to 24.5 percent shooting for the game but managed an impressive 43 percent (6-14) from three-point range.
Purchase is back in Skyline action this Saturday at home against St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn). Tipoff is slated for noon.
